Bio/Description

Shayan Saqib is a junior at Friendswood High School in Friendswood, Texas, and the president of the Common Ground organization, a nonprofit that promotes respectful dialogue on controversial topics to bridge ideological and societal divides. Under his leadership, the organization has expanded to five sister chapters across Greater Houston, impacting more than 300 students. Through interdistrict meetings featuring guest speakers — including police officers, geneticists and community leaders — Shayan has helped students engage in meaningful discussions on racial biases, privilege and cultural identity. Beyond his work with Common Ground, Shayan founded the Asian Culture Club at his school to promote cultural understanding. What began as a small group of students has grown into a thriving initiative that hosts cultural festivals, discussions and events, including an Indonesian-inspired badminton tournament and a Pani Puri Festival. Through these efforts, the club has actively challenged stereotypes, such as the model minority myth, and encouraged students of all backgrounds to celebrate and learn about diverse cultures. Growing up, Shayan often felt the tension between his cultural heritage and the pressure to assimilate. Through these organizations, he wants to ensure that no student feels like they have to erase who they are to belong. This year, he plans to expand Common Ground to an additional sister chapter and organize the annual interdistrict conference, bringing together students from different schools to engage in open and meaningful dialogue. By encouraging open conversations and empowering future changemakers, he remains committed to building a more inclusive and understanding community.
