Samantha Nmezi is a senior at North Star Academy Washington Park High School in Newark, New Jersey. Having witnessed firsthand in her communities obstacles that hinder students' success, Samantha is passionate about creating opportunities for underrepresented communities, particularly in technology, education and programs that empower others. She is the founder, captain and president of her school's competitive FIRST Robotics team, where she helps create pathways for Black and Hispanic students to engage with STEM throughout the Uncommon Schools Network. By breaking barriers in traditionally white male-dominated fields, Samantha is empowering the next generation to believe in their potential. Her current role as a machine learning engineer at Audible introduced her to the idea of using computer models to benefit her community, leveraging data from large language models and dependable resources to create equitable solutions for marginalized communities. She hopes she’ll be able to assist her community by making algorithms to reallocate resources and gain ethical data that would not be used against them but to help them. In addition to her work in technology, Samantha is the founder and captain of her school's varsity wrestling team, a sport traditionally dominated by white males. She has helped create opportunities for Black and Hispanic women to not only participate but to excel in wrestling, paving the way for future generations of women of color to engage in the sport.
