Towson High School in Baltimore, Maryland
Safora Noor is a junior at Towson High School in Baltimore, Maryland. She is the president of her school's Asian Student Union, a workshop presenter for the Maryland Asian Pacific Islander South Asian Conference (MAPISAC), a youth leader in the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA)-Asian Pacific American Advocates and a chapter lead of the Dear Asian Youth nonprofit. Through all her roles, Safora aims to combat Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) hate and celebrate her Asian heritage. With her school’s Asian Student Union, she has planned school-wide events, such as a Lunar New Year event, and brought together Asian youth in the school. For Dear Asian Youth and OCA, she has planned events in the community, such as a mini conference for AAPI youth, and posted about AAPI culture and history in the United States, reaching more than 500 youth. With MAPISAC, Safora has presented workshops to more than 50 students, and this year she is leading her school to participate in the conference for the first time. She is also involved in advocacy. For the past two years, she and other student leaders have pushed for legislation in Maryland (HB1323) that would require the state to include AAPI curriculum in classrooms. Whether it be planning community events or speaking to legislators, Safora aims to make everyone feel included in their community
