Bio/Description

Saawan Duvvuri is a junior at the University School of Nashville in Nashville, Tennessee. He is the executive director of LiteratureDiversified, a global, youth-led nonprofit he founded after recognizing the systemic exclusion of minority narratives in American classrooms. He sought to address racial inequities in education by developing curricula, lesson plans and educational resources that amplify marginalized voices, particularly those of Black, Hispanic, Asian-American, Indigenous, LGBTQ+ and female historical and literary figures. The organization has created more than 450 educational resources on subjects including U.S. history, English, financial literacy, and social action curricula, which have been implemented in 760-plus classrooms, impacting more than 15,000 students worldwide. Saawan has hosted panels on diversity in higher education, developed an Indigenous history curriculum for Cherokee students in Oklahoma and launched an oral history project on African-American contributions in Washington, D.C.. He is coalition chair of the Tennessee Student Equity Leadership Board (TNSELB), a statewide youth advocacy coalition that promotes civic dialogue on racial and social justice issues in Tennessee. Under his leadership, TNSELB has expanded to include 50-plus student board members from more than 12 schools, published the Equity in Action student newspaper and hosted public forums on education policy, hate crimes and affirmative action. Outside of his initiatives, Saawan has conducted research with Harvard, Vanderbilt and UCLA, where he explores the impacts of racial inequities in American educational and criminal justice systems. Through his work, Saawan has helped reshape how students and educators engage with racial equity in schools.
