Bio/Description

Michelle Huang is a junior at Olentangy Liberty High School in Powell, Ohio. As president of the Ohio Kung Fu and Tai Chi Association's youth division and performance team, she is passionate about fostering cultural appreciation and recognition of central Ohio's East Asian and Chinese communities. As an organizer and emcee for the Ohio Moon Festival, which drew 500-plus attendees, she helped the event gain statewide media recognition and receive acknowledgment from the governor, city councils and two state representatives. Michelle is a nationally recognized martial artist and was honored in Ohio Senate Resolution 3 for her achievements, including being the first Ohioan and youngest woman selected for the U.S. National Adult Team in kung fu and winning silver at the Pan American Wushu Championships. She has expanded cultural engagement through performances at elementary and high schools and developed a martial arts curriculum at her local Chinese school, increasing access to traditional Chinese kung fu. Michelle founded and leads Olentangy Liberty's Young Asian Students Society (YASS), one of the school's largest non-academic clubs, which has raised funds for Asian-led disaster relief and launched the school’s first annual Diwali and multicultural celebrations. In 2023, Michelle led a campaign to diversify school lunch options to accommodate halal and vegetarian needs, an issue that disproportionately affects Asian students.
