Hannah Glenn is a senior at East High School in Memphis, Tennessee, where she serves as senior class vice president, president of Distributive Education Clubs of America and executive officer in the school's Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps battalion. One area Hanna is particularly passionate about is encouraging voter registration and participation, especially among young African Americans. With this motivation, Hannah created the Pledge to Vote Project to inspire high school juniors and seniors in urban communities to commit to registering to vote when they turn 18. Despite facing resistance from some school leaders, she persisted, and her project has garnered over 450 student pledges so far. Another major challenge Hannah identified is the lack of basic voter education in urban communities. Many students are not learning about the importance of being a registered voter and participating in elections. Hannah aims to break this cycle by educating her peers on registering and exercising their voting rights as new voters. To sustain her efforts, she has mentored and trained other high school students in the Memphis area to continue the Pledge to Vote Project after she graduates this spring. Hannah's goal is to keep raising awareness about the importance of African American youth being committed and active voters. She believes that when people use their power as voters, they can elect leaders who are responsive to and reflective of the communities they serve. By encouraging voter registration and participation, Hannah hopes to strengthen democracy for all.
