Bio/Description

Hajar Abdel-Rahim is a senior at Strawberry Crest High School's International Baccalaureate program in Dover, Florida. As a first-generation, low-income student, she was admitted into the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, which provides advising and resources to low-income, high-achieving students navigating the college process. Given that her rural school has a minority enrollment of 63%, with 50% economically disadvantaged, she recognized a critical gap in college access and took action. She founded College Compass to address the lack of guidance for lower-income, first-generation and minority students, particularly the 46% Hispanic population. Through workshops and Instagram and YouTube content, she aimed to make attending in-state and out-of-state colleges more attainable. Workshops covered scholarships, essay and interview skills, extracurricular and summer programs, resume-building and major-specific internship opportunities. She also recruited National Merit finalists to host free SAT seminars. Beyond in-person events, College Compass's Instagram has reached more than 21,000 viewers, providing college application tips and links with major-specific resources, volunteer opportunities and scholarship information. Inspired by her mother's belief in education as a pathway to opportunity, Hajar's goal was to ensure others didn’t feel trapped by their circumstances. To sustain College Compass, she interviewed more than 20 underclassmen and selected eight to continue its mission after she graduates, ensuring that students at her school will continue to receive the support they need to achieve their higher education goals.
