Andover High School in Andover, Minnesota
Emma Yu, a junior at Andover High School in Andover, Minnesota, is dedicated to promoting cultural awareness, equity and inclusivity. She founded AAPI Youth Voices, a youth-led nonprofit organization with more than 80 chapter leaders across 11 U.S. states and six countries. Witnessing cultural misunderstandings in her community, Emma took action by collaborating with legislators to advocate for including Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) history in Minnesota's school curricula to ensure that every student in Minnesota public schools learns about AAPI history as an integral part of American history. Beyond advocacy, Emma leads free music and art workshops each year for underrepresented communities, creating spaces where students can explore different cultural traditions, as well as hosting multicultural events and fundraisers, offering cultural experiences that strengthen communities and advance racial equity. Recognizing the lack of AAPI representation in her predominantly white community, Emma founded the AAPI Leadership Club to foster discussions on race and identity and helped establish similar clubs in other schools. To bridge the gap in AAPI history resources, Emma developed AYVheritage, a free, continuously updated mobile app supporting educators and students. She authored three AAPI books and the novel “The Untold Stories of AAPI,” documenting the struggles and contributions of AAPI individuals. Additionally, Emma translated the book “The Selected Tang Poems,” making Asian literary heritage more accessible to Western audiences. In addition to promoting diversity and inclusion, Emma launched a program providing free one-on-one English lessons to underserved students in earthquake-affected regions, helping bridge global educational gaps.
