Bio/Description

Diamond Previlon is a senior at Union County Vocational-Technical High school in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. For most of Diamond's life, she never envisioned herself as a leader. However, after identifying incidents of racial discrimination on her school's campus, she felt compelled to work for change by establishing the Black Student Union (BSU). As BSU founder, she has collaborated with its members to develop the organization into a center of support for Black students and a catalyst for cultural awareness among the student body. The BSU hosts workshops, field trips and events that expose students to history missing from textbooks, such as the role of cornrows in escaping slavery and the courage of Claudette Colvin. Field trips included a trip to Washington, D.C., where students visited the Lincoln Memorial and the National Museum of African American History and walked the same route as the 1963 March on Washington. To promote post-secondary education, the BSU hosts an annual trip to HBCU college fairs for juniors and seniors. To encourage cultural appreciation, the BSU hosts spirit weeks that incorporate students wearing cultural clothing and pan-African colors to school. The BSU partners with the school's morning announcement team to share daily facts on Black history and current events affecting minorities, fostering racial understanding and cultural appreciation. Today, the BSU continues to help all students of color feel supported and seen on campus and at district events, build community and encourage dialogue among students about bias and discrimination
