Amelia Tan is a senior at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools in Chicago, Illinois. Amelia is the founder and executive director of Mommy's Gift to Me, a nonprofit dedicated to increasing the rate of infant breastfeeding for mothers all across the Chicagoland area. In Chicago, specifically for Black and Hispanic mothers, there are significant disparities in breastfeeding rates. Many mothers are dissuaded from breastfeeding by inaccurate information, the social stigma in some communities and inadequate healthcare systems. As a result, both mother and child are deprived of the health benefits. Amelia founded Mommy's Gift to Me to address these issues by providing necessary resources, support and education for all mothers, at no cost and without eligibility criteria. She has distributed breastfeeding kits at community baby showers, resource fairs and health events and has made an impact in more than 100 ZIP codes. Amelia created the Ambassador Moms Program, which is uniquely “by mothers, for mothers.” Mother ambassadors co-host trilingual support groups to empower mothers with the knowledge and confidence to breastfeed. By working closely with other community organizations, Amelia has encouraged dialogue between healthcare providers and community members, ensuring that the voices and needs of all mothers are heard and addressed. By connecting mother to mother, and successfully scaling Mommy’s Gift to Me's impact by investing in those who care deeply about the same social issue, Amelia is combating systemic biases in healthcare that have historically marginalized these communities
